Repairing electrical outlets and switches can often be done alone, but if you are not knowledgeable on electrical repairs and safety, it is suggested to hire a professional. It is extremely important to have your electrical wiring inspected regularly. Problems with outlets and switches that go untreated can cost you much more if you wait until it’s too late.

Typically, electrical outlets do not need major repairs. From time to time they will loosen and need to be tightened. This can usually be fixed without the help of a professional. Keep in mind, outlets may be connected to two different circuits of your homes electrical wiring system. For this reason is it best to test both outlets prior to proceeding with any electrical work.

In addition, it is important to know a bit about Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs). Basically, GFCIs are designed to sense an electrical ground vault and proceed to interrupt the protected circuit. This stops the flow of electrical current before someone gets hurt. Certain geographical locations require GFCIs to be present in kitchens, bathrooms, and exterior outlets. Do you know what outlets need to be grounded?

Pay attention to switches that feel warm when you touch them. Refrain from using such switches until a qualified electrician can look at it. It will most likely need to be replaced. During this time, or any other time, you may want to consider upgrading your switches. There are so many wonderful features to today’s switches that will enhance your day to day living.
