Basement Access Doors

Basement access doors are a wonderful way to provide a safe
and convenient access from the outside. If you do have a basement or
are thinking of adding one, basement access doors are a wonderful
way to get more use from your basement. However, you will want to
take several things into consideration.
First you must decide on accurate construction of the areaway
foundation. You can either use poured concrete or a concrete block.
Next you will have to decide on stairs and doors. Many homeowners
use pre-made stringers to support the doors because they are the
most cost effective method. Other options include pre-cast concrete
stairways.
If you are adding basement access doors to an existing foundation,
you will want to make sure to hire a qualified contractor. Much work
is involved in cutting into the surrounding foundation and wall.
Also, proper knowledge is needed in order to follow the codes for
bracing, headers and support. Adding basement access doors to a new
home is a fairly easy process.
Next, you will need to install the doors. Basement access doors
consist of a concrete well, sidewalls, and doors. If you are just
replacing the doors, make sure to inspect the actual well and make
sure it is in a suitable condition for new doors. You will also need
to measure the overall width and length of the well.
Installation of the door unit requires you to take the door frame
and bolt it into the concrete. You will then need to caulk the area
for a tight hold. If you are looking to preserve the look and life
of your doors, consider coating them with metal enamel.
